In the previous experiment known as Maldo Map, we established the importance of using anonymous networks and highlighted the general existence of spy nodes. This experiment will demonstrate, for the first time in the history of privacy coins, how network-level spying works on the real blockchain, the importance and ways of mitigating it, and what the de-anonymization of users looks like.
This is not a theoretical attack against a test network or an unknown privacy coin. We were able to de-anonymize the entire network of the second most popular private-by-default privacy coin, Zano. In addition to identifying the origin IP address of every transaction in the network, we used network and timing analysis to de-anonymize users balances who stake funds as part of their Proof of Stake consensus mechanism. This study will illustrate how the lack of IP obfuscation techniques, no Tor support, and the choice of PoS consensus have made the Zano blockchain a privacy nightmare. Added by: Rucknium |
